When we conducted a workshop to a group of students in Thimphu YDF Media Lab last month on blogging, one common question many of them asked during its Question-Answer Sessions was how one can make money out of blogging.
My initial thought of taking them as young passionate blogger in true sense was changed. It seemed they came to attend the workshop and then will be starting blogs with a primary objective to make money. So I could make out two things out of their objective of attending the workshop and then blogging.
They have heard blogging being a possible source of income before they have heard the other non-monetary wonders of blogging. They now wanted to start blogging to make money.
This means even if they start a blog now, they will gradually quit after few years. They are bloggers who want money more than other things. But money is a bad master. One cannot go far with a passion for money.
This is one of the main problems of new bloggers: expecting your blog to feed you with money like an ATM machine from the day one. There are other problems.
10 blogging problems new bloggers would face during blogging journey and how to overcome them like a professional blogger.
#1 Thinking you knows better
If you think so, you can be categorized as an egoistic person. Egoistic person usually remains away from the crowd – not that he is being neglected –but he doesn’t want to remain in the crowd. His ego doesn’t allow it.
But since blogging is all about networking and socializing, it becomes imperative that egoistic person won’t succeed in networking and socializing. This means such bloggers will remain neglected and won’t receive good readers. To make money out of blogging, number of hits is a yardstick.
#2 No Time Division System
I am quite sure that this will be a problem even for others. We tend to spend unreasonably high amount of time on other useless things leaving less time for our blog’s content development, SEO optimization and marketing.
To avoid this blogging problem, we must have a statement which shows distribution of daily disposable number of hours to all the activities based on the level of their urgencies and importance. Instance reducing time on Facebook will increase availability of time for other important activities.
#3 No passion for Reading
We have heard a proverb that compares human mind with a parachute that works only when it’s open. This means if you keep your mind closed, it won’t work even for its intended purpose. And according to experts, reading is one of the most effective methods of opening your parachute like mind and then facing blogging problems.
You won’t get ideas from where you can start exploring unless you read. It’s only in the process of exploration, new things are learned. You must develop passion for reading and have to ensure reasonable number of hours is also being dedicated for reading. It will take you away from writers’ block-another blogging problem.
#4 No patience to wait
If your aim is to make money out of blogging, you really have to wait. It’s not that your blog will start generating money from the day one. First you must have good contents, traffics and page-ranks. Only then you may expect some bucks.
If you cannot wait for it and remain steadfast in blogging even if you don’t make single penny, you’ll find hundred and one reasons to quit blogging. This reduces scope of making money in future.
#5 No Business Plan
If some money is expected to earn from your blog, your blog deserves to be treated as a business concern. This means you must have proper short-term as well as long-term goals and targets sketched and set for it. You must have a plan when you actually want to monetize its contents. You will become victim of blogging problems if you blog with plans.
#6 No willingness to Sacrifice
If you want to take up blogging seriously, be ready to make so many sacrifices. A good blog that receives good traffics and income isn’t something that will come as ready-made. It will be something built over the time with labour of love, care and numerous sacrifices.
If a new blogger doesn’t have willingness to make so many sacrifices starting from financials to family time, he won’t be able to travel far in blogging and the possibility of making more money in future will be nipped.
#8 Socially Not Active
If you read stories of some successful bloggers, one thing common in them will be the level of their social activeness. Socially active bloggers tend to build online business so quickly that their blogs will receive good visitors.
To follow such track and bring more readers and traffics, you must manage time to participate in other social activities. It’s often when we are socially active and get to know new people, we will get solutions for numerous blogging problems we face.
#9 Expecting too much
High expectation has indeed made so many bloggers die alive. It’s quite a simple thing in life that a person will start losing hope entrusted on something or somebody when they don’t meet his expectation.
So the rule I have for you is, ‘keep your expectation low’ and go on blogging as if you don’t care of money and traffics – they are something you will gather on the way if you are pursuing content development seriously.
#10 Starting High
Some bloggers throw away maximum of what they have to make their blogs appear big. It will surely help. But how long one can go on throwing money for blog without any return? It’s often at such situation bloggers will have reasons to quit blogging.
Therefore, it ok not to spend during initial phase. And when you do so, do it sensibly. We must know gestation period for any blogging related business is quite longer.
The take home lesson I am trying to convey here is that you should keep just reasonable expectations. No one has shown us shortcuts for success.
And also don’t spend unnecessarily for the development and advertisement of your blog or its contents. When you realize so much has gone out of your pocket without any return, it’s the time nothing would hold you from turning away from blogging. But it doesn’t mean one cannot earn money. I mean only that it will take time.
