Let us assume you also own a blog at free blogging platform (blogger). It has got quite a number of posts and traffic volume is also good.
You have also monetized it with Google Adsense and also with other similar content monetization programs like Infolinks, Bidvertiser, Chitika, Viglink etc. You are earning few hundreds of dollars in a month from them.
But the problem is it’s hosted just on a free platform. It means you are not getting the traffic inflows at the optimum level.
There is scope for you to make more money by increasing traffics. But the notice-ability of your blog is low.
Advertisers don’t trust you as your blog being in free platform as a matter of fact. So you are thinking to create another blog, a self-hosted blog.
You have created a self-hosted WordPress blog. Now what’s to be done with your Blogspot blog? Here are two options you can consider:
- Export its contents to new Self-hosted blog and close the blog by deleting it.
- Keep the contents and sell it to another person/blogger who is interested to it.
Export means to migrate all the contents of Blogspot blog to your new self-hosted blog before deleting.
All of its contents will appear as new posts in that new blog in the order of their posting dates in previous blog. Even all the comments will get migrated.
However, you should consider the following situation during exporting of one blog’s contents to another blog:
- Followers won’t be transferred
- Email subscribers won’t be transferred
- Commenters Profile links will be disconnected
- Post links won’t be changed
- Post thumbnail sizes won’t be changed
You have to notify your readers and invite them to your new blog. You have to edit links within posts and also do so many editing of thumbnails. They will cost you so much time.
Reminder: You must delete the blog as soon as export process is completed and all posts get published. If not, search engines will treat articles in new blog as duplication and even penalize you for plagiarism.
Therefore, wiser approach is to keep the blogspot blog as it is or consider selling it to another blogger who is interested in purchasing on the ground of your blog being popular with good number of followers and traffic inflows.
It can be done. But technically or legally, selling your blogspot blog to someone won’t be termed as selling in a true sense. You don’t own that blog and you are a blogger, blogging at free a platform owned by Google.
You cannot advertise to sell in other third party platforms where websites and blogs are traded.
It can be termed as transferring access rights and responsibilities to another person. So how this can be done? There are two ways for this transaction:
- Invite buyer as author, assign admin rights and let him remove your email id from author list.
- Give the login email id and password to the buyer to let him do whatever he wants to do thereafter.
In the first case, you are selling the contents only and your online identification details. It has following advantages:
- Online personal details will remain protected
- You can use your email for other purposes
- Email ID can be used to create blog in other platforms.
But in the second case, you are selling not only the contents but also your online identification details. It has following disadvantages:
- Online identification details don’t remain protected
- You cannot use your email for other purposes
- Email ID can’t be used to create blog in other platforms
Therefore, if you are planning to stop blogging altogether, you can follow the second case-selling your blogspot blog along with surrender of email address login credentials to the buyer.
But if you want to protect your online identification details and also want to open or have already opened another blog using that same Email ID, you must sell your blogspot blog only in first method.
You must consider the following while choosing how to sell your blogspot blog to another person/blogger:
#1 online social networking credentials
If you don’t care of your personal details shared online, you can sell your blogspot blog along with your Email ID password.
#2 care for your online circles
Once your blogspot blog’s login Email ID along with password is given to second person, how your online friends and followers will be interacted thereafter will remain in his/her hand.
If you care this and want to ensure they are interacted well, sell only the contents and not Email ID access rights.
#3 blogging passion
If you want to create a new blog in another platform, it’s better not to sell Email Account. If you have good circle of friends in social networks in which the same email account is associated, marketing of your new blog becomes much easy.
#4 same email blogs
If you have some other blogs in other platforms created using the same email account, you shouldn’t give email account access rights to the buyer. If so, it’s as good as selling all your blogs.
When will someone actually decide to sell his/her blogspot blog? It’ll be when s/he has another better blog in another platform and managing them at same time is tedious.
In such cases, considering of not even selling but rather converting it to a multi-authored blog will solve the problem. Many bloggers who have blogs at blogspot as well as well as self-hosted WordPress, this is what they follow.
But if you want to quit blogging and social networking altogether thereafter, you can just sell off your blog contents as well as give login Email ID with its credentials.
